Edition 5/20. One of five woodcuts by the Polish-born artist Jakob Steinhardt (1887-1968) illustrating the history of the Hebrew alphabet. This is the first episode, Antiquity, depicting letters being incised on tablets. Steinhardt's History of the Hebrew Alphabet prints served as designs for murals that were displayed in the Palestine pavilion at the 1939 New York World's Fair.
