Named for the mourner's prayer in Jewish ritual, the Kaddish series is a suite of eight intaglio prints by the Argentine-born artist Mauricio Lasansky (1914-2012). The prints were created using multiple plates and a combination of techniques including etching, engraving, soft ground, aquatint, electric stippler, scraping and burnishing. The complex imagery combines familiar symbols drawn from different religious traditions to represent the universality of human experience. In this, the first print of the series, a self-portrait of the artist appears in the lower section. His hands display both tefillin (phylacteries) and stigmata. Above is a dove, a traditional Christian symbol of peace. The number 6102301 alludes to the six million who disappeared in the Holocaust.
